The Homeopathic Consultation Process
The homeopathic consultation is an opportunity to describe your health concerns and symptoms in greater depth than ever before. This itself often provides a window to better self-understanding.
Your initial consultation takes at least two hours. The homeopath is primarily concerned with what uniquely defines who you are, such as sleep position, dreams, food cravings, habits, fears, hobbies and interests, family medical history and many other areas. The disease itself you are suffering and how you experience it is also very important to understand. A single homeopathic remedy is then given to treat your entire symptom picture and to effectively bring cure and balance to your overall health condition.
Your first follow up visit is at 4 weeks and lasts 45 minutes. Thereafter follow up visits are scheduled anywhere from 6-8 weeks depending on your health needs.
What to Expect in Homeopathic Care
During an acute illness, you should notice improvement within the first 24 hours, though you will still require a normal, gradual convalescence. While undergoing chronic care, each individual reacts to the remedy in a different way. Usually the effects are gentle and gradual, though at times more rapid or dramatic changes occur. Since the remedies work to improve your general health, you should not be concerned if local symptoms do not change immediately. Patience is a necessary ingredient you must add to the overall care. Temporary minor aggravations of symptoms, or recurrences of previously experienced symptoms, sometimes occur. These are not side effects of the remedy, but an indication that the body is responding to the medicinal stimulus. If any reaction occurs that concerns you, do not hesitate to call.
People with chronic symptoms improve over widely varying periods of time, usually 3-24 months, depending on the depth and severity of the condition. You will, however, experience definite improvement in your symptoms within a few weeks of starting the correct remedy. During the whole of this time, regular follow up visits are essential to nurture the healing process through the inevitable remedy changes and occasional setbacks that occur. These follow up visits are scheduled at varying intervals anywhere from three weeks to six months depending upon the individual characteristic of each person’s progress.
Homeopathy can be used as a comprehensive healthcare system, as well as for specific complaints. Once the treatment of a specific problem is complete, the homeopathic remedies can be used to strengthen the person’s mental and emotional life. This will help to prevent disease in the future by increasing the person’s resistance to emotional stress. Of course, lifestyle and diet are also important in preventing disease.
About the Initial Homeopathic Consultation
The information you provide the homeopath is essential for effective homeopathic care. The consultation involves extensive questioning that may be unfamiliar to many who are used to a few quick questions from a regular medical doctor. Below is a guideline of what a homeopath is often interested in.
As homeopaths, we treat people not just conditions. In an initial consultation it is typical to discuss your physical condition, but more importantly you also talk about your mental and emotional health as it relates to those physical concerns.
How you feel and what you feel about a particular concern/condition is very important. For this reason it is often repeatedly asked, “What is the feeling”, “Tell me more”, “Describe it for me”. As a homeopath I have come to understand that the more a person is asked these questions, they may be able to bring out a deeper level of response or go to a deeper level of awareness about the issue.
Chief Complaint. What is bothering you the most? What is the main reason for your visit?
The effect of your complaint. What is the effect of the complaint on you in your life?
Local sensation. Does it feel tingling, burning, numb, crawling, itchy, pressure? Is the pain dull, aching, drawing or cramping?
Location. Where is the complaint located on your body?
Discharge. Is there discharge, if so, what color, consistency and odor?
What makes your complaint better or worse? Is it affected by the position of your body, activity, weather, daily routine, pressure? Anything that influences the intensity or pattern of your symptoms should be noted.
Concomitants. Does any other symptom occur in association with your symptoms? Ex: nausea with headache, skin symptoms clearing with PMS.
Onset of symptoms. Do you associate your condition with any emotional upset, prolonged stress, exposure to weather, injury, or any other factors?
General information about yourself. When do you have the most energy? How are you affected by your environment? What makes you feel better or worse? What do you enjoy most in life?
Life history. Your childhood and/or any significant or emotional events in your life.
Mental/Emotional nature? What are your most characteristic mental and emotional patterns? What stresses you? How is your memory, clarity of thought and ability to create? What limits your ability to express yourself?
Dreams. Your dreams are very important, especially the feelings within your dreams. Please try to note at least one or two significant dreams in your life or recurrent dreams. Dreams the night or few days before homeopathic treatment are also often helpful.
Medical records are always helpful. Please bring these with you if they are relevant to your condition.
Artwork, Dreams
Homeopathic practitioners are interested in knowing who you are on all levels. This extends beyond your physical symptoms. Who we are is often revealed in our artwork, hobbies and dreams as a form of self-expression. Please bring any artwork or dream material in to the consultation if possible.
For Children
It is helpful for us to have both parents present for the consultation if possible. If not, a letter summarizing issues or concerns from the not present parent can be helpful. Please bring in illustrative copies of your child’s artwork to the consultation. On the day of the consultation, please let your child dress in a way that they are most comfortable. Choice of dress can provide a window into the child’s nature and preferences.
Length of Visit
Homeopathic consultation for chronic problems takes at least 2 hours. Acute issues require a shorter visit, usually 20-30 minutes. During this type of visit, chronic symptoms will be ignored and only those symptoms that have arisen at the time of the acute illness will be considered. You will still need to relate your symptoms as precisely and with as much detail as possible. Lab tests or x-rays may be requested from your doctor if required.
Taking the Remedy
Based upon the information you provide, you will be given a remedy to begin stimulating the healing process. If you are under care for a chronic problem you may be instructed to take a single dose of your remedy in the office or a liquid daily dose. The single dose may be all that you require for a month or more. Acute cases and certain chronic cases often require more frequent doses. Please follow the instructions you will be given about how to take and store your homeopathic remedy, as well as what to avoid during care.
Follow Up Visits
Follow-up appointments are typically every 3-6 weeks. These visits are very important. Often they will be scheduled even when you are doing well or continuing to make progress. This sometimes seems unusual or unnecessary to patients unfamiliar to homeopathy. We’re all used to the conventional idea of going to the doctor only when we are sick. However, my observation has been that those clients who return for their regularly scheduled follow-up appointments complete their homeopathic care in shorter time and with better results. Although you may be taking homeopathic remedies and be under active care for as long as two or sometimes three years, it is important to keep in mind that the ultimate goal of homeopathic care is to reach a high level of health without being dependent upon any remedies.
It is important to understand how you are doing as a whole during a follow up visit. For this reason, specific questions will be asked about your main complaint, as well as about your general sense of well-being.
Typical follow up questions include, but are not limited to:
• How are the complaints you came with?
• Are there any new complaints to report?
• How have your mood and state of mind been?
• Is there, or has there been, any situation that has affected you or is causing stress?
• Did you notice any change in the way you are dealing with stressful situations?
• What dreams did you have?
• How are you feeling in general?
• Anything else you would like to say or report, or any queries you may have?
